Boulder Opal is a type of opal that is still connected to it's host rock, which is usually iron stone or fossilized sandstone. Silica-rich water runs between the cracks in the host rock and forms opal. When I cut boulder opal I "chase the color" through the seam in the rock. For this reason all of my boulder opal pieces will be free form and typically have undulating surfaces.
